Gateway Game Strategy
Nimble Info

1. Strategy
The strategy for Nimble is simple enough that you can work out your next move in your mind on the fly without reference to any cheat sheet.
Explaining all the mathematics underlying the game leads to a lot of topics. I provide a few hints and examples on a separate page, Strategy. That should be enough to get you started if you really want to explore the game.

Traffic Lights
Or you can use Traffic Lights, Status, and Undo, , to map out a winning strategy.
Make a move.
If traffic light turns red, Undo and try a different move until traffic light shows green.
Record the computer's moves and your winning responses.
Note that once the game is declared over by a message saying you have won or lost, the Take, Pass and Undo buttons no longer work. The only available button is New to start a new game.

2. Options
Toggling traffic lights or choosing a new playing card back takes effect immediately.
Changing Rows, Maximum Take or Take Last takes effect with game.

Maximum Take and number cards per row should be numbers. Some entry checking is done as soon as you click outside the number entry box.
Letters and symbols will be removed. Any remaining digits will be combined into a number.
The Maximum Take must be between 3 and 15 (inclusive). The rows must be between 0 and 15 (inclusive).
If the entry is not a number or not in range, the computer should erase it and replace it with the most recently accepted value.

When a new game is started, then more checking will be done.
*** There must be at least one row with at least 3 cards in it.
*** If Maximum Take has "all" checked, it will be set to the maximum number of cards in any row.
If Maximum Take does not have "all" checked, then the number will be used. If too large, it will be reduced to the maximum number of cards in any row.

If you have Local Storage, any change in options will be stored for future use as soon as any option is changed.
If you don't have Local Storage, any change in options will be lost when the web page closes. You'll have to reenter the changes the next time you visit.

3. Move
*** To move, click your mouse on a playing card. That playing card and all playing cards to the end will be selected.
*** Click . Your move will be made. The computer will make its move. Both moves will be reported in the message area.
*** If the traffic light shows red, the computer thinks you are in a losing position. You might want to click and try again.
*** For the first move only, you can click to have the computer make the first move.
